In War and Love
A theatre performance at Lokstallarna. Troy is burning, and whilst the older women of Athens have taken control of the state treasury, Lysistrata explains to her friends of the same age how they are to put an end to the conflict.
Freely adapted from Lysistrata by Aristophanes and The Trojan Women by Euripides. The history of war is often told by and about men. In War and Love, the ancient plays Lysistrata and The Trojan Women are woven together into a narrative in which, instead, women’s voices and experiences are highlighted and take centre stage. Four actresses perform an adapted version of Euripides’ and Aristophanes’ texts, interwoven with song, humour and, hopefully, comfort. Moments of pain flash through the comedy, whilst laughter opens up paths out of the darkness of tragedy.
The comedy Lysistrata tells the story of how the women of Athens go on a sex and love strike to bring an end to the war between Athens and the rest of the Hellenic world. In contrast to this story stands the tragedy The Trojan Women: a tale of the fate of the women of Troy once the war is over.
Tickets required. The performance lasts 1 hour and 50 minutes.
