A hundred years ago, Yiddish culture was flourishing, and there was a vibrant movement of female poets driven by bold, artistic visions. But they also faced resistance.
A captivating music and poetry performance featuring newly composed music that tells the story of the period before World War II, when Yiddish culture flourished. There was a vibrant movement of female poets driven by artistic visions and a longing for liberation. They faced resistance, but wrote nonetheless. And they left behind a treasure trove of poetry that is brought to life here through songs in Yiddish, poetry readings in Swedish, and stories from the era in which they were active. Featuring Ida Gillner and Livet Nord in a heartfelt, playful, and dynamic interplay with one another through original compositions that range from cinematic chamber music to folk tunes and 1920s cabaret.

Yiddish is one of Sweden’s national minority languages, and this performance highlights the language along with a culture that is unknown to many. It opens a window onto a period in history marked by social unrest and political turbulence. And at the same time—a time when artists, in the midst of this chaos, took their place and dared to challenge old ideas and ideals.

The performance touches on topics and themes such as language (Swedish and Yiddish), history, gender equality, literature, challenging social norms, identity, creativity, minority culture, music, and poetry.
Shtoltse Lider has garnered attention both nationally and internationally and is considered significant in promoting these Yiddish poets in Sweden.
