Verdi’s *Otello* premiered in 1887 and is a masterpiece that is as philosophically profound as it is dramatically gripping. Shakespeare’s tale of an outsider – a great hero unable to control his jealousy – was skilfully adapted by the librettist Arrigo Boito into a taut and powerful libretto.
Soprano Ailyn Pérez makes her Met debut as the suffering Desdemona, alongside baritone Artur Ruciński as the villainous Iago. Michele Mariotti conducts the Met orchestra and chorus in this breathtaking music. Moscow Conservatoire. In 1881, it had its professional premiere at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow.
