Description

Bellini's last opera offers captivating melodies and spectacular coloratura. Met presents a new, grand production of I Puritani, the first in almost 50 years.

I Puritani was the last work by Vincenzo Bellini, the great Sicilian representative of bel canto opera. The opera was written specifically for four of the leading singers of the time, and its success depends almost entirely on the vocal abilities and artistic sensibilities of the singers. The opera suggests that the thin veil of reason can tear at any moment and that madness can plunge a person into a destructive abyss. I Puritani had its world premiere at the Théâtre Italien in Paris in 1835.

We see a world-leading quartet of stars, conducted by Marco Armiliato, in the demanding leading roles. Soprano Lisette Oropesa and tenor Lawrence Brownlee are Elvira and Arturo, united by love but divided by the political conflicts of the English Civil War; baritone Artur Ruciński is Riccardo, betrothed to Elvira against her will; and bass-baritone Christian Van Horn is Elvira's sympathetic uncle, Giorgio.
