Opera - The Girl of the Golden West

Puccini’s thrilling drama set in the Wild West returns in a new production by Richard Jones, marking the Metropolitan Opera’s first new production of La fanciulla del West in over 30 years.

Puccini’s ‘American’ opera had its highly acclaimed world premiere at the Metropolitan Opera in 1910, with the composer himself in the audience. The plot is set during the California Gold Rush, and the ‘girl’ of the title is one of Puccini’s most appealing heroines – a strong and independent woman who is determined to win the man she loves.

Although the opera fell out of favour with audiences for a few decades following its initial success, 'La Fanciulla' has enjoyed a resurgence in popularity in recent years and is now regarded as one of Puccini’s finest works.
Soprano Vida Miknevičiūtė makes her Met debut as Minnie, the feisty innkeeper with a heart of gold who finds love when she least expects it. Tenor SeokJong Baek plays the dashing bandit who turns up in the remote Californian mining town to steal her heart.
We see baritone Christopher Maltman as the man of the law, determined to uphold justice – and win Minnie for himself. Maestro Keri-Lynn Wilson takes to the conductor’s podium to lead one of the opera world’s most action-packed adventures.
