Description
Strauss' elegant love story Arabella is set in 19th-century Vienna and comes to life in Otto Schenk's magnificent production, acclaimed for its beauty and charm.
The romantic comedy Arabella was the last collaboration between Richard Strauss and his great librettist Hugo von Hofmannsthal. Although it contains some elements of opera buffa, the work is characterized by great elegance, and the development of its characters is both gripping and touching in its own way. The title character—honest, innocent, and well-meaning—is one of the most appealing and believable figures in the world of opera. Arabella had its world premiere at the Staatsoper in Dresden in 1933.
Soprano Rachel Willis-Sørensen sings the title role as the young noblewoman Arabella, who seeks love on her own terms. Louise Alder makes her Met debut as her sister Zdenka, while Tomasz Konieczny is the dashing Count Mandryka, with whom Arabella falls in love.
