Description
A forbidden love story in a free-religious village in 1950s Västerbotten. The play is based on the first two books in Karin Alfredsson's trilogy. It is also a depiction of a free-religious village at a time when modern Swedish society is beginning to emerge, while strong religious traditions still live on.
The young teacher Vajlett comes to Granträskåsen in Västerbotten to teach the village's children. Here, most of the villagers are members of the local Pentecostal congregation, and Vajlett soon understands that she is not considered pious enough to be a teacher.
There is talk and gossip, not only about Vajlett, but also about the newly moved postmistress Rut. The one with short hair who lives without a man, even though she is over 35 years old. Vajlett and Rut get to know each other, and against her will Vajlett realizes that she is falling in love. No one else gets to know anything about the feelings that grow so strong between them. A new pastor comes to the village and delivers sulphurous sermons about homosexuality and sin. Homosexuality was regarded as ungodly, shameful and distasteful, and as a disease and a crime until 1944.
The fear of being revealed eats away at Vajlett and Rut's relationship, and the relationship becomes increasingly fragile.
Four female actors bring all the village's characters to life, as well as Vajlett and Rut.
